Spring Has Sprung!

Jen has this poem, “Spring has sprung, the grass has ris, I wonder where the birdies is?”. I always know it is spring and time to get busy with the yard, or as we jokingly refer to it as the grounds, when I hear her say it. We have more weeds than ever, which I attribute to the extremely hot weather last Summer. We have grass burn that we can only hope will come around and areas that were worn down by construction. We already know we have to replace at least one pallet of grass and we are hoping that it isn’t more. We also have several areas untouched after buying additional property. Work is cut out for us and I hope we’re up to the task.

I had to start mowing before February was over, this in the middle of the garage finish work. We have had mild temps longer than normal and we are getting better than normal amounts of rain. An obvious recipe for growth, not only for the grass, but for over thirty different species of weeds. We had decided we better get weed-and-feed fertilizer out soon, but then we went on a trip to the west coast. By the time we got back, the weeds had doubled in size. I pulled out the spreader and found several leftover bags of fertilizer. Dumped in the spreader and before I could stop, I dumped a whole bag of wet, mushy, non-spreadable fertilizer in the hopper. Argh! I had to let it drain, and over a week later, it is still draining. I was able to get it out of the hopper and now am ready for dry fertilizer to spread. But no rain in sight for another week, but I am ready. I guess I still will have to mow the weeds down. Maybe the grass will take better hold, and with luck, the grass will take over and choke the weeds out. The trees are budding out, but over thirty plants didn’t survive the first year and the Landscapers came out and have agreed to replace all after Easter under warranty. Whew! Dodged a bullet there.

I’m still squeezing in most work as I get a break from the home remodeling projects that seem never-ending and ever daunting in scope. We are trying to take on more and more ourselves, but I know my limitations and still have to rely on Josh for some of the work, with a little Ed mixed in for larger than handy-man work. We are close to kicking back and just enjoying a daily routine without construction on our minds 24/7. We love it all, we get great comments, but still subscribe to the idea that we didn’t do any of it for favor of others. Heck, most of what’s been done has been done behind the fence. However, we are ready to enjoy without a thought of we should be working on something else.

Spring is here, I’m ready for the winter to be gone and look forward to some mild temps for a couple of months before hitting the searing heat of Summer in East Texas. I wish we felt like spring ourselves instead of us both constantly nursing some ache or ailment. People should be like nature and be a new fresh every spring that puts a smile on our face and a little bounce in our step. Boy would that be great! Right now, I’d take 30 minutes of sitting on the patio and listening to the birds and watching the gecko’s run everywhere. Spring has sprung indeed!
